First Annual Knoxville Overground Startup Awards on November 19th!

In the spirit of Global Entrepreneurship Week, Knoxville Overground is proud to host the First Annual Knoxville Overground Startup Awards at the World Grotto on November 19th, 2008 from 6PM - 9PM.

At this event we will be providing cocktails and drinks for the entrepreneurial community and recognizing thirteen startups in the Knoxville/Oak Ridge region for excellence in one of the following categories: 1) women in entrepreneurship, 2) “green” startup, 3) nonprofit entrepreneurship, 4) persistence, 5) best patent filed in 2008, 6) intrapreneurship, 7) Web, minority-owned startup, 9) community organizer for entrepreneurs, 10) The Overground Platinum Award, 11) The Overground Gold Award, 12) Biotech, and 13) Innovative Medical Device.

Given the rapid growth and volunteer efforts of Knoxville Overground over the past couple of months, we haven’t had a chance to work on our website too much. But yesterday I corresponded with Scott Spaid at http://www.mediapulse.com and we look forward to meeting with him next week with our new website platform ideas. World Grotto is the new location for Knoxville Overground meetings!

Susie Dew, the manager at World Grotto, has graciously invited Knoxville Overground to use their space at 16 Market Square as a temporary location for coworking sessions during the day M-F from 10am - 5pm.

Officially we still meet every Wednesday from 12pm - 4:30pm however there’s usually someone from Knoxville Overground M-F if you ever want to stop by and ask questions!

Announcing the Incorporation Committee for KO

Gregory Compton, an MBA student at The University of Tennessee, is heading up our efforts to incorporate as a non-profit organization. He is currently seeking volunteers to sit in on a couple of committee meetings to explore our options as well as ascertain professionals in the community we can ask for help and guidance.

Now is a great time to get involved. We just set up a basecamp account, an on-line project management tool, for Knoxville Overground. It’s a great way for our members to get involved, delegate tasks, collaborate and see our timeline for our goals we want to accomplish over the next six months!

Introducing Knoxville Overground

After a couple a months, a subset of us in the CoworkingKnoxville group started to brainstorm what it would be like if Knoxville had its own coworking space akin to San Francisco, New York City, Austin, TX, and other entrepreneurial & progressive hot spots in the country.

After a few cups of coffee, things started going nuts. Ideas were shooting right and left like fireworks. The “what-ifs” then started flowing everywhere. What if we could provide a wiki for incoming entrepreneurs new to the Knoxville area that gave them an archive of information about launching a company in Tennessee (for about a half to a third of the cost than other places in the country). What if we had ongoing classes, using moodle.org as our CMS, for startups and self-employed professionals? What if we brought in speakers from across the country — only through video conferencing so that it was cheaper, greener, and trendier? What if we set up this space in Market Square in downtown Knoxville? What if we could provide our members all the benefits of working for a corporation without having them work for a corporation?

And then the conversation got really interesting. We didn’t just start thinking outside of the box.

We realized there was no box.

Seriously this was some good coffee.

This site is still under construction, 100% volunteer powered, and we’re making updates daily.
